I'm in a show opening this Friday at Diverseworks in the Flickerlounge. It's a new video and there's a clip above.

It's the regional counterpart to the exhibition“Now that I’m by myself,” she says “ I’m not by myself, which is good” which is curated by Rachel Cook. All artist included in both exhibitions are really fantastic, and I really enjoy their work.

I got to meet Yuki Okumura yesterday who is in town for the opening all the way from Tokyo, Japan. He is really nice and hiswork is awesome. I hadn't seen work byBrian Bress or Wynne Greenwood but they are both really great. And I super <3 Laurel Nakadate. It's so nice to see an entire video show here in Houston, and all performance related or based.

I'm sure the opening will be nuts, but go see the show another time, when you can spend some time watching everything. I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Anyway, I'm really excited about this idea I've been playing with for a while, and I've come up with a personal term for it, consumer art. Generally I like to take objects, mostly consumer goods, that have inherent meaning and combine them in a way that creates tension. Or even doing a series of actions, like purchases and documenting them in a way that defines them to me as performance. I also like reveling in the mundane, exposing the cheesy and embarrassing nature of mass marketed items and the idea that these things make your life bettter. Whatever. I am extremely inarticulate when it comes to putting these things in writing so.. I'll just clue you in on the new project.

So my senior year book page is one of those things I haven't looked at in years, for the sheer thought of it makes me cringe. It's like this horrible snapshot of my life that I really rather forget and somehow I can't get rid of it. Almost 1000 people I know for sure have copies of it and have flipped to my page and felt sorry for me for being such a retard lame ass. This historical record of how pathetic I was at that time will probably survive me.

Ok, so I'm being harsh but I'm accepting it now. I'm spending time with it and a whole slew of memories related to it. Even better, I sent a scanned image of it to get painted in China, at a monumental 72" x 48"!!! Here's the proof they sent me early this morning. I could not be more pleased.

I'm serious. The coolest. Ever.

I'm all about my family right now, and I don't care that I'm talking about them on my blog. It is ok to be proud. I think they are a huge part of what I do, or what I haven't done lately.

Gene's awesome accomplishments also remind me that I need to get to work. I've been busy being a new mom, even though I call it lazy and feel guilty about not making stuff lately. But now, I've got an awesome studio in my attic and I plan on tackling it asap. I just need to drink coffee every morning for sure.

And a lot of times I don't know and most of the time it's ideas for videos or performances or installations that I randomly write down, and then think more about and then come back to. Youtube turned out to hate my videos when I tried to upload them, so search me on google video to see clips of my videos! It's actually really nice to have them up, although I still wrestle with them being so out of context. But that's ok, once people see the clips, they will want to see full installations and will give me lots of shows! Right?

So anyway, I've posted here a clip from a performance that I did in Austin in 2006 called "VOTE JENNY" which I did in Houston earlier in 2004 at Project Row Houses. Not many people have seen this video or performance so enjoy!

My new website is up!

The name of this blog and my website owes much to this picture you see. When I was an undergrad at UT, I did a project at the gallery there called "The After Party". Basically I had my 23 birthday party in the gallery which quickly turned into a food fight, which people then turned into grafittied walls via cupcake icing, which is what you see here. The phrase remaining on the wall kills me, and I think speaks volumes.

I suppose I should post about things that I'm in BEFORE they happen, but I've been sick so the blog has gone on the back burner. Sorry.

Anyway, the still above is taken from my video "Girlstar" now at Lawndale Art Center for the Big Show. So go see it. It is in its entirety there. The show is normally a huge clusterfuck of too much work, but I felt like this year was a little more cohesive. Maybe I'm biased because I'm in it, but I seriously think Rita Gonzalez did a better job of weeding out the crap that gets submitting to these shows. I can only imagine how painful it is. Anyway, I'm happy to be a part of this year's exhibition.

Also! I gave a presentation of my work for the Artist Saloon program through Buffalo Bayou Art Park! It was so fun! I normally get really nervous speaking publicly and I didn't do so awful this time! Plus you would be an idiot not to go to this monthly awesomeness, there's free beer AND food! So that's right, go see artists give fun presentations, drink and fill your belly! Delightful!

Dudes. I stole this image from Diverseworks website (I'm not even going to think about how to make that possesive) from this show of Argentinian artists. I thought it was one of the best shows I've seen in a while. There was a sweet purple lacquered and painted corvette style frame that was on air switches, so it would move like a low rider or some pimp ride. Lots of large scale sculpture and wall pieces including lots of bright color. Truly sensory and nice. Sorry if you missed it, but mad props to DW.

PLEASE go see Kendell Carter's show at Finesilver. It is one of the most clever combinations of consumerism and culture, most as functional objects. Really smart and whoever buys the hoodie chair, can I please come visit it?

Julie Kinzelman with her wicked little eye spied Misaki Kawai, and artist from Brooklyn. I've seen before here in Houston ages ago, and the work stayed with me. It's fun bizarre stuff about popsicles and triangle trees. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Julie is really doing some interesting things there with her business, I wish there were more like her...

Inman also looks like there should be some interesting drawings there. I haven't yet been over to see them, but this month should be pretty exciting with Asia month at MFAH inspiring gallerists all over to expand their vocabularies. Keep it up people!

also i am cursing a certain gallery director today while i nurse this mighty hangover i've got going. doesn't mean i'll miss the opening at finesilver tonight, which should be radical. that kendell carter is a fine man.

I'm in a show at the museum in wichita falls, tx. Some people will see this show and think it is really good and/or weird. I liked it, and thought it was a really strong survey of Texas artists unlike this.
